I never thought that my nearly useless skill of winning at the claw machine that I mastered as a teenager would ever help me as an adult, let alone get the girl. But that unicorn managed to get me one date with Lex that has lead to another and then another.

I couldn’t get her to open up in the diner about her past when we first met, but slowly, I chipped away at the wall Lex put up around her. She admitted that the man she calls dad is actually her stepfather. Her real dad died when she was just a baby. I opened up to her about my ex-fiancée how we were high school sweethearts until she dumped me my sophomore year in college when she realized that I didn't have plans to move back to our hometown after graduation. I don’t mention that she’d insisted that we wait to have sex on our wedding night, despite the multiple cases of blue balls I experienced over the years of our relationship.

After she dumped me, I focused on my art, which led to a few galleries eager to show my work. It wasn't until I met Lex that I suddenly felt the need to slow down and realize that a part of me was missing. I'm not sure how I'm going to tell her that I'm still a virgin, but tonight is the night.

"So, how did you like the show?" I ask as we head out of the small venue that could only be generously called a theater.

A college friend of mine, Matt, was working the lighting and said that because he let me sleep on his couch when I first moved to the city, I owed him to show up tonight. I knew the play would likely be terrible since the cast was hustling on the street trying to give the tickets away, but I had no idea it would be what it was. Lex was a trooper and sat through the entire show.

“It was very—" she says and then pauses for a moment to try and find the right words. But before she can say anything, her foot catches on a raised portion of the sidewalk. She pitches forward, her arms flailing, and her right fist hits my chin as I reach out and grab her before she hits the ground.

"I got you," I say, pulling her towards me.

“I think you might have just saved me from spending the rest of the night in the emergency room.”

“It’s the least I could after making you sit through that show," I say as I rub my jaw.

Her eyes narrow on the spot she clocked me. “Are you okay?”

“Don’t worry about me. It’s not broken.” I wiggle around my jaw to show her.

"And here I was going to kiss it better, but if you say it's fine." She turns out of my arms to continue walking, but I grab her hand and pull her back to me. Our bodies collide, and I wrap my arms around her to hold her tight.
